A successful summer garden doesn’t start in June — it starts now during the spring.

In Northern New Jersey, timing is everything. Our last frost typically falls between late April and early May, and that window determines when your garden can truly take off.

Whether you’re starting fresh or refreshing an existing space, here’s what to do — and when to do it.

Clean Up and Clear Out (Late March–Early April)

As soon as the ground is workable:

  • Remove dead plants and debris
  • Pull early weeds before they spread
  • Cut back overgrowth around the garden area

Getting this done early helps prevent pests and disease before the season ramps up.

Build or Refresh Your Beds (Late March–Mid April)

This is the time to install or repair raised beds:

  • Check for damage from winter
  • Make sure beds are level and positioned for full sun (6–8+ hours)
  • Plan spacing for airflow and easy access

Getting your structure in place now ensures you’re ready to plant on time.

Focus on Soil First (Early–Mid April)

In Northern NJ, soil starts to warm up in April — making it the ideal time to prep:

  • Add compost or organic matter
  • Loosen compacted soil
  • Avoid synthetic fertilizers that disrupt long-term soil health

Healthy soil early in the season leads to stronger plants and better yields later.

Start Cool-Season Crops (Early–Mid April)

Once daytime temps are consistently above ~50°F, you can plant:

  • Leafy greens (lettuce, spinach, arugula)
  • Peas
  • Radishes and carrots

These crops thrive in cooler weather and should be planted well before the last frost.

Set Up Watering Now (April)

Before plants are in full growth mode:

  • Check hoses and connections
  • Install drip irrigation if possible
  • Make sure all beds get consistent coverage

Getting this set up early prevents stress once temperatures rise.

Plan for Warm-Season Crops (After Last Frost: Late April–Mid May)

Tender plants should wait until frost risk has passed:

  • Tomatoes
  • Peppers
  • Cucumbers
  • Zucchini

In Northern NJ, a safe planting window is typically: Late April (with protection) to mid-May (without risk)

Planting too early can stunt or damage these crops.

Plan for Continuous Harvests (April–May)

A productive garden isn’t planted once — it’s planted in phases:

  • Stagger plantings of greens every 2–3 weeks
  • Plan for summer crops to follow spring crops
  • Use vertical supports (like trellises) early

This keeps your garden producing from spring through fall.

Start Early — It Matters More Than You Think

In Northern NJ, the season moves quickly.

If you wait until late May or June to get started, you’ve already missed:

  • Early harvests
  • Ideal planting windows
  • Weeks of production

The most successful gardens are:

  • Installed in early spring
  • Planted on schedule
  • Designed for the full growing season
