As we welcome in September, we may still be enjoying our homegrown tomatoes but may feel a need for some new and creative recipes! In this blog, we’ll explore some ideas that may use your tomatoes in novel and refreshing ways. And along with delicious recipes, we also have a couple non-food surprises!

Tomato Watermelon Salad with Basil Sorbet
  • Combine diced fresh tomatoes and watermelon, drizzle with balsamic reduction, and serve with a scoop of homemade basil sorbet for a refreshing and unexpected summer salad. What a great tomato recipe idea! (Adapted from “The New Mediterranean Table” by Sameh Wadi)
Tomato Jam and Goat Cheese Crostini
  • Create a sweet and savory tomato jam by simmering fresh tomatoes with sugar, spices, and balsamic vinegar. Spread the jam on toasted baguette slices and top with creamy goat cheese and a sprinkle of fresh thyme. (Inspired by “Preserving Italy: Canning, Curing, Infusing, and Bottling Italian Flavors and Traditions” by Domenica Marchetti)
Tomato Infused Olive Oil
  • Infuse olive oil with the essence of fresh tomatoes by gently heating the oil with tomato slices and herbs. Strain and store the infused oil for drizzling over salads, pasta, or grilled vegetables. (Adapted from “The Art of Infusion: 70 Beautiful Recipes to Add a Burst of Flavor to Your Oil, Vinegar, Spirit, and Water” by Jordan Wagman and Jill Mead)
Tomato Butter
  • Another great tomato recipe is to blend fresh tomatoes with softened butter and a touch of garlic, herbs, and salt to create a flavorful tomato-infused butter. Use it to spread on bread, melt over grilled meats, or toss with pasta for a burst of tomato goodness.
 Tomato Facial Mask
  • Blend ripe tomatoes with a touch of yogurt and honey to create a homemade facial mask. The natural enzymes in tomatoes can help exfoliate and brighten the skin, while yogurt and honey provide hydration and soothing benefits.
Tomato Dye for Fabric
  • Simmer a mixture of chopped fresh tomatoes and water to create a natural dye. Strain the liquid and use it to dye fabric, creating unique shades of orange and pink. Experiment with different fabrics and mordants for varying results.

Remember that some of these ideas involve creative adaptations and interpretations. Always ensure that any ingredients or methods you use are safe and suitable for your intended purpose.
